VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN NORTH SUMATRA

Nestled at the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, Tangkahan is a hidden gem where nature lovers, adventurers, and eco-conscious travelers find a deeper connection with the jungle. Now, there’s a unique opportunity for passionate explorers to get involved in something truly special: volunteering to help open new jungle trekking routes — and even spending nights under the stars while capturing the heart of the rainforest through photos and video, or you can take part in the tangkahan english club school and many others.
Let’s break it down

1. Take your part in Tangkahan English Club

Tangkahan english club

Tangkahan English Club was founded around 10 years ago with the support of local rangers who shared a vision to empower the younger generation through education.

This free English school was created for local kids in the Tangkahan area, giving them the opportunity to learn and grow in a fun, supportive environment. As a local community, we are incredibly proud and grateful for this initiative.

It represents our shared hope that the next generation will be more knowledgeable, confident, and better prepared to connect with the world beyond our village. We are always happy and open-hearted if there are people out there who would like to volunteer as teachers, help in any way they can, or even donate books and educational materials.

What you can do:

There are various choices of parts that you can do

  1. You can take the part where you become a teacher to teach English, or playing with children in our school village or let us know if you would like to volunteer in any other way
  2. You can donate any items such as books, stationery, clothes and anything else, even in the form of money, and we will really appreciate your donation.
  3. You can help us to build our school by donating your energy or materials or money to make it better for our children.
  4. Promoting Tangkahan English Club. Covid-19 has hit our tourism really hard and destroy our village economy, so we would be very happy if you could help by promoting Tangkahan English Club.

2. Open a new trekking route in the jungle (temporary)

Open New Trek Route in Tangkahan

Tangkahan’s pristine jungle holds countless unexplored paths and hidden wonders. As part of our eco-volunteer program, you’ll join our local guides and conservation team to help scout and clear new trekking routes. This is your chance to be part of something meaningful — supporting sustainable ecotourism while immersing yourself in one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.

Here we want to open and create a new trekking route to a village far from Tangkahan with the aim of making the village known to many people.

What you'll do

  1.  Assist in exploring and mapping out new jungle trails
  2.  Help clear light vegetation to open safe pathways
  3.  Document flora and fauna sightings along the way
  4.  Learn from experienced local guides about jungle survival and wildlife

3. Support our local women

One of the most beautiful things happening here is the Mowan Activity — a grassroots women-led initiative that transforms plastic waste into beautiful, handmade art like handbags, wallets, and eco-accessories.

But like any good movement, they need support, inspiration, and connection. That’s where you come in. We are calling out to kind souls, creative minds, eco-warriors, and anyone with a big heart to join us in Tangkahan.

Whether you’re a traveler looking to give back, a sustainability enthusiast with ideas, or someone who simply wants to be part of a beautiful movement — there’s a place for you here.

Here’s how you can help

  1.  📣 Promotion:  Help us share the story of these amazing women. Take photos, make videos, post on social media — help their message travel the world.
  2.  🎓 Education:  If you have skills in business, marketing, art, or sustainability, come teach! Help the women build a strong foundation for their craft and grow their impact.
  3.  💡 Inspiration:  Got a cool idea? Maybe a new product, a design, or a way to grow the project? We’re listening. We love collaboration.
  4.  🤝 Connection:  Bring people together. Connect us with others who might want to help or be part of this journey.

4. Restoration

Restoration in Tangkahan

Over the years, parts of our jungle have been damaged, leaving empty patches of land that desperately need reforestation. That’s where you come in.

We are calling for passionate volunteers to join our Restoration Project. Our mission is simple: to plant trees and bring life back to these empty spaces. By filling these gaps with native trees, we help protect the environment, restore wildlife habitats, and keep the spirit of the jungle alive for future generations.

Here’s how you can help

  • Plant young trees in areas that have been cleared or damaged.
  • Help nurture the seedlings until they are strong enough to grow on their own.

  • Learn about native plants, the ecosystem, and sustainable ways to protect the rainforest.

  • Connect with our warm local community and experience authentic village life.
