FAMILY TREK

Embark on a jungle adventure to suit all ages. Our half-day family trek in Tangkahan is the perfect way to explore the wild without an arduous hike. In just 3-4 hours, you’ll follow the ancient elephant paths through lush, green jungle, encountering exotic sights and sounds along the way.
The trail leads you to the majestic Ficus tree – an awesome natural wonder that’s perfect for family photos.The family trek is the ideal choice for visitors looking for a short but exciting jungle adventure for the whole family.

- 8;30 am – leave site to begin trekking
- Wander through rubber plantations before crossing the suspension bridge to enter the protected Gunung Leuser National Park
- After 1-2 hours of walking in the jungle, take a rest break and enjoy delicious fresh tropical fruit prepared by our team
- During your trip, keep an eye out for orangutans, gibbons, hornbills, macaques and plenty of reptiles and insects
- After resting, continue another about 1 hour to the ancient ficus tree, following elephant trails.

FULL DAY TREK TO BAT CAVE

There’s more to the jungle than meets the eye… after you’ve explored the rainforest, let us take you underground to meet a beautiful bat colony and discover what else makes its home in the dark.
Squeeze through narrow passages and marvel at the cool interior of Tangkahan’s very own bat cave. We’ll carefully guide you through the labyrinth passages beneath the jungle to spot the adorable bat colony, random frogs, insects and other reptiles that call this place home.
The trek involves a few hours in the jungle before heading underground, then you[‘ll exit at a natural riverside hotspring for a relaxing soak .
◉ Schedule
- 8;30 am – leave site to begin trekking
- You will have a 5-10 minute walk to reach the border of the Gunung Leuser National Park
- Trek through the rainforest for about 2 hours before taking a break to enjoy delicious fresh tropical fruit prepared by our team
- During your trip you will be able to see wild animals such as Sumatran orangutans, gibbons, hornbills, long-tailed monkeys and other animals if you are lucky.
- After resting, continue another about 1 1/2 hours to the bat cave entrance
- Spend 20-30 minutes exploring the cave before emerging at the river
- After enjoying the cave, it’s time to go back trekking for about 15 minutes and have lunch on the river bank.
- After lunch, you are free, you can relax or swim in the natural hot springs just across the river.
- Lastly, what just might be the highlight of the day. Lie back on our tubing raft and head back home downriver on our jungle taxi.

JUNGLE TREK + MEET THE ELEPHANTS

Spend the day experiencing the jungle as a human before joining with our incredible rescue elephants and seeing it through their eyes. This trek is ideal for guests who don’t have much time to spare but want to see as much as the jungle as possible.
◉ Schedule
- 8;30am – leave site to begin trekking
- You will have a 5-10 minute walk to reach the border of the Gunung Leuser National Park
- You will have an uphill trek up Mount Leuser for around 15 minutes – the slope is moderate and we will take it slow.
- After the climb, it’s time for a flatter route as we continue hiking in search of wild animals such as orangutans, gibbons, long-tailed monkeys, hornbills and other animals
- Trek through the rainforest for about 1 hour before taking a break to enjoy delicious fresh tropical fruit prepared by our team
- After a decent break, we’ll continue trekking to meet up with the elephants of the Sumatran Rescue centre.
- Witness the elephants as they wander through their natural habitat
- You will spend up to 30 minutes near by elephants.
- After you are ready with elephants, you will continue trekking towards the ficus tree for about 30 minutes.
- After finishing at the Vicus tree, you will exit the forest and stop at the Bulu River for lunch which is ready to be served to you.

ELEPHANTS WASHING

Have you always wanted to get up close and personal with the beautiful gentle giants of the jungle? This is your opportunity!
Join Tangkahan’s rescue elephant herd as they splash around in the crystal clear jungle river. Under the watchful guidance of their personal mahouts, each elephant gets to swim in the river and lie back and relax while you give them a luxurious scrub.
While ethical elephant tourism is a complex issue, responsible interactions help sustain their welfare and support local conservation efforts.
With about 1 hour long, elephant washing at Tangkahan is a unique opportunity to observe and connect with these incredible animals while contributing to their ongoing care. We encourage mindful participation, respecting the elephants’ well-being above all else.

WALKING WITH ELEPHANTS + WASHING

Join our elephant herd for a refreshing morning mandi (bath) in the river. You’ll get to hang out with them in their natural environment and have the opportunity to get hands on as they enjoy the water.
After about 40 minutes of bathing the elephants, it’s time for trekking following the elephants in the wild. This activity is one of the most popular activities for every guest
◉ Schedule
- 8:30 Enjoy an easy 10-minutes scroll through community gardens as we head to meet the elephants at the Batang River.
- 9:00 Join the elephants for a morning wash in the clear jungle river. This will take around 40 minutes.
- After you finish playing with the elephants, you will go straight to the Leuser National Park to walk with the elephants and see them in their natural habitat.
- Here you will be guided by a guide and mahout while walking with the elephants.
- You will spend about 1-2 hours walking with the elephants.
- During the trip you can feed the elephants but PLEASE NOTE only the food provided by the mahout (elephant handler)
- After finishing walking the elephants, you can relax or explore the Buluh River

- After the bat cave, it’s just a 30 minute walk to reach our first camping spot, called “Sekucip.” This is where you’ll find one of the true Tangkahan icons – a natural hot spring tucked into the side of the river.
- Soak your tired feet in the hot spring, swim and relax while our team prepare a fantastic meal for you – you will be served a variety of local dishes and fresh fruit
- After dinner, feel free to hang out with the team, playing cards and chatting, go for a short night trek, or head off to sleep in your comfortable little tent setup.
- Day 2 in the jungle;
- 8-9am Fuel up with a delicious jungle breakfast of pancakes, omelettes, fried noodles or rice (and of course, the freshest, yummiest fruit)!
- Once you’re ready, we’ll cross the river and head back into the jungle for 2 hours of discovery and adventure.
- We’ll pass ancient buffalo routes, were loggers dragged enormous felled trees out of the rainforest. You can still see these old pathways and view some of the large pieces of wood left behind.
- We’ll pause for a typically delicious jungle lunch amid the forest, before continuing our rainforest expedition in search of orangutans, gibbons, hornbills and more.
- In the afternoon, we’ll arrive at Goa Kambing – the “Goat Cave” (don’t worry, there are no actual goats here these days!)
- Here, you can rest and relax while our amazing team sets up your tents and cooks you a fantastic meal.
- After dinner you have the option to do a short night trek, or relax and enjoy the vibes with our team.

Wandering around our gardens and the nearby community gardens is like entering a hidden paradise! The air smells of sweet durian, tangy lemons and fresh earth. Durian trees tower overhead, while citrus trees add a zesty kick to the breeze.
And it’s not just a food forest you’ll discover: often the gardens attract other peckish species – keep an eye out for primates, birds, squirrels and more as you explore.

There are many more free, fun things that you can do in Tangkahan, such as visiting the 2 nearby villages of Kuala Buluh and Kuala Gemoh. In these two quaint local villages, you can see the houses abd learn what local life is like in rural Sumatra.
You can also become a volunteer at the Tangkahan English Club (TEC), helping the children practise their English skills. Our community fundraised to build this school to provide a free resource for children to learn English, helping their future career prospects.
